"Playing cards!?! Gimme a break ... I'm outta here."
Are they gone yet? You know, the folks who refuse to use playing cards in a mentalism act?
Good ... that means just you and I will be the only ones doing this incredibly simple yet powerful act.
Seriously, though, I understand why some mentalists won't use playing cards ... the whole 'magician' stigma, and the concern that audiences won't believe you're a real mindreader. I must confess, I used to be one of the biggest proponents of that school of thought. But one day I was in a situation where I had nothing to lose and thought, "What the heck -- I'll give it a try."
And the audience's response was WAY out of proportion to what I would have anticipated. I mean, audiences automatically assume you're doing card tricks when you pull out a deck of cards, right?
Wrong.
Here's Gene describing how the Emergency Mental Routine came about:
This is something I sure wish I'd had at those times, because it can be done close up and surrounded, for only a few people, or in the largest auditoriums. And, as noted above, it's extremely useful in the kind of situation where you're part of a program that includes other acts and one of them can't make it. You can step in with this routine and fill the gap and not have to carry a ton of apparatus to do so." |
Here's what the audience sees:
Phase 1 - Telepathy: A woman merely THINKS of a card and takes it from the deck. The performer, some distance away, names the card.
Phase 2 - Clairvoyance: The same woman reverses a single card and -- without looking at it -- reverses it in the deck. SHE doesn't even know what it is, yet the performer (still at a distance), names the card.
Phase 3 - Thought Control: The woman removes several cards from the deck and mixes them. The performer, blindfolded, names them one by one. Then, for a startling finale, the performer has the woman mentally project the name of the last card to a second woman in the audience.
NOTE: Both of the women are exactly as they appear: they are two people picked at random ... no sleights are used ... and (Heaven help me, I thought I'd never say this in one of my ads) no rough and smooth, short and long, wide and thin, light and heavy, etc. -- any deck can be used.
SPECIAL BONUS #1: Emergency Psychic Routine
Will each performer present the material in these books exactly as suggested by Gene?
For the sake of progress in the art, let's hope not! Don't get me wrong -- the material is 100% solid and can be presented exactly as it is.
At the same time, however, it can be said that without a doubt, we stand on the shoulders of the giants that precede us, and hopefully we're able to add a bit of our own originality along the way. With that in mind, I've written up my take on the Emergency Mental Routine as I have performed it for real audiences in real venues.
Like the EMR, the Emergency Psychic Routine has been used by several professionals as part of their regular program or, in some cases, the only thing they do. During the course of the EPR presentation, after an audience member's mind is read, the performer proves that they have the power, too. The highlight of the EPR comes when the performer reads the minds of five audience members and provides readings for all of them.
To be honest, I was a little hesitant to ask Gene if I could offer my variation along with his work. Here's the actual email exchange between Gene and myself:
>> Gene -- >>
Tried EMR last weekend with a slight variation >> LGT Loren -- That sounds GREAT! By all means, tack it on. Wish I'd thought of it . . . Gene |
SPECIAL BONUS #2: EPR II - A Private Reading
The final piece of the EMR/EPR package -- "EPR II: A Private Reading" -- was created to adapt the EPR presentation to one-on-one situations. The EPR II reading is extremely flexible, and can run anywhere from 10 minutes to a complete hour. During the course of the 5-part EPR II reading, the client writes a question, and the reader answers that question while demonstrating their clairvoyant abilities and delivering truly meaningful wisdom that the client can use.
"EPR II: A Private Reading" is more than just an empowering presentation, however. Within the pages of the manuscript, the issue of deception in a private reading is discussed, the use of stacked decks is explored (including a system unknown to magicians), an incredibly flexible card spread is explained, and a powerful ending is revealed. There's a whole lot more included, too, including ideas from Ted Annemann, Neal Scryer, Richard Webster, Robert Farrell, Benjamin Franklin (!), and more.
I have grown to detest the use of testimonials in ad copy that are meaningless examples of mutual admiration societies, and have promised myself that I would no longer include them in Pro Shop ads, but when I received an unsolicited testimonial about EPR II from a respected member of the community, I decided to break my self-imposed rule. Here it is:
